The Varieties of Mindful Experience

An 3-Day Educational Course and a Retreat on Various Forms of Mindfulness

What actually is “Mindfulness”? How have Buddhist traditions defined this through the ages? How do different Buddhist traditions practice Mindfulness and what practices developed over time? What are both the dangers and benefits of different forms of mindfulness? What differences are there between Buddhist and secular forms of mindfulness?

This course will answer all these questions and more during a 3-day retreat period mixing historical and textual lectures with guided meditations on the variety of Buddhist traditions that have developed teachings and mindfulness practices. Being able to learn such practices in traditional sacred spaces only enhances and deepens the experience.

Themes of the “Varieties of Mindful Experience” course include:

  • Traditional definitions and descriptions of “mindfulness”
  • How the Buddha described the various foundations of mindfulness
  • How early shifts occurred in mindfulness
  • Different Chinese schools and their practices
  • Vajrayana and Esoteric interpretations
  • Secular mindfulness movements
  • Ethics of mindfulness

Please check the Events page for available times and details for in-person courses. Most such courses will be held in the Kyoto area. However, some will be held in other areas of Japan and in other countries as well.

In the future, we plan to offer an online version of this course.
