becomes clear.”
What is Clinical Meditation?
“Clinical Meditation” is a system of applying meditation traditions to care of self and others, especially in clinical settings. As opposed programs like MBSR, Clinical Mediation uses many meditation styles from Buddhisms and other world traditions. It was developed by Oshita Daien in Japan and he categorized all these different meditation styles into 4 general categories which could have different purposes and values depending on peoples’ circumstances and needs.
The Four Meditation Categories
Clinical Meditation separates all contemplative systems into 4 categories to help organize them, teach them, and apply them in ways that will be most suitable for the patients
1. Calming – many basic relaxation exercises common to world meditation traditions
2. Observing – meditations that help increase our physical and mental awareness
3. Energizing – Using chi flow and similar notions, these activate the body-mind
4. Unifying – Deeper states of meditation which not only help provide a sense of oneness, but also release underlying or previously unconscious stressors
Basic Certificate and Training Information
Certifications are currently available in 4 levels:
Clinical Meditation: Practitioner 1
Clinical Meditation: Practitioner 2
Clinical Meditation: Teacher 1
Clinical Meditation: Teacher 2
The “practitioner” level trainings involve training in the 4 categories of meditation along with basic theory of Clinical Meditation. The teacher stages apply these practices more directly to helping to guide others in situations like patient care.
Although training in such programs has been available in Japanese for many years, these are the first English-based programs available. At the moment, trainings are held in Winter and Summer. Please see the calendar or contact us for further information.
